RITUALS: Morning Coffee to Slow Down

Aug 15, 2025

It’s 9PM and all you can think about is: your morning coffee. One of the most, if not THE most, important parts of the day. It’s what gets you started. It’s what gets you moving. It’s your morning routine. And, something that dogs and humans can 🤝 about is a good morning routine.

Well, it’s Ross here writing this and I want to talk coffee. As a former barista, I love seeing how people enjoy their morning cup of joe. What are we talking? Pour over? Chemex? AeroPress? Stove top? Automatic drip? Espresso machine? Cezve?

Generally speaking, for us, we've been loving pour over and Chemex as of late. They make such a lovely, balanced brew for all types of roasts and enough for two people. It’s also a great routine: heating up the water, getting the filter wet and tossing the water, grinding the beans, and getting that circular pouring motion in action. When we went to Kyoto this Spring, we noticed the barista at WIFE & HUSBAND held the handle with one hand and, with a folded towel, held the bottom of the kettle. Game changer. We also occasionally will make stove top espresso and top it with hot water: an americano.

As a barista, one of my favorite drinks I made myself was a single shot of espresso in an espresso ceramic dish and the smallest amount of hot water over that. It was tasty and something I could have a few times in a day without feeling too jittery.
